Yemeni Cleric Deported by U.S.

In New York, a U.S. federal judge by the name of Dora Irizarry recently ordered a Yemeni Muslim cleric's deportation.   The cleric had been originally sentenced to 75 years imprisonment for being convicted of supporting terrorism against the United States.

This past Friday, Mohammed Ali Hassan al-Moayad (60) was sentenced with time served.  Judge Irizarry then ordered his deportation - essentially kicking him out of the U.S.  al-Moayad's bodyguard (Mohammed Zayed, 34) was also sentenced with time served and deportation.

In October, the U.S. Court of Appeals overturned both al-Moayad's and Zayed's convictions.  Judges ruled that the judge that had presided over both men's cases in 2005 allowed evidence during the trial that had turned the jury against the men.

Both men had pled guilty to charges of conspiracy to provide support to a foreign terrorist organization.  The organization they supported is known as Hamas.  Zayed and al-Moayad were captured and arrested in Frankfurt, Germany back in 2003.

Judge Irizarry said in court that al-Moayad, "shall be removed from the United States promptly upon his release from confinement and that the defendant be ordered removed to Yemen."

After the ruling, al-Moayad's lawyer, Robert Boyle, told the press that his client is dying from several ailments, including cirrhosis.
