U.S. Senate Group Working on TPS Immigration Reform

As reported by ABC news, a bipartisan group in the Senate is working on an immigration reform bill that may create a relatively fast path for legal citizenship for immigrants in the U.S. who are here under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program. The TPS program was designed for individuals who are already in the U.S. who would face danger if returned to their native country. Temporary conditions which may result in a foreign country receiving the TPS designation include conditions such as civil war, environmental disasters such as hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes, and other temporary and extraordinary conditions.

During a TPS status, individuals in the U.S. from the foreign country who are eligible cannot be deported and can obtain an employment authorization document. TPS does not, however, provide a legitimate route to lawful permanent resident status or any other immigration status in the U.S. Furthermore, when a country loses its TPS designation those individuals here protected under the TPS program lose their protection against deportation and are expected to return to their native home.

Currently, eight countries have been given TPS designation. These include El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Syria. At present, nearly 300,000 foreign nationals residing in the U.S. are currently under the protection of the TPS program. Many of these individuals have been living and working in the U.S. for decades.
