Investigation Leads to One Deportation

Recently, police conducted an investigation that led to multiple arrests and one deportation.
On Wednesday night, investigators with the Carteret County Sheriff's Office arrested Kevin Mallette, 36; Renee Zeller, 29; Dragan Vukicevic, 48; and Richard Echavez, 18.  At the time of  their arrests, the offenders were staying at the same home when the Department of Probation and Parole arrived at their residence.

Both Mallette and Zeller were charged with larceny and possession of stolen property from a previous investigation.  After their arrests, their bail was set at $2,000.

Echavez was charged with drug crimes, including possession of marijuana, possession of a schedule II narcotic and underage consumption of alcohol.  His bail was set at $1,000.  Jenkins faced similar charges, including possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and underage possession and consumption of alcohol.

When police searched the residence, they discovered that Vukicevic was an illegal alien from Yugoslavia.

When investigators spoke with Vukicevic, he gave them a fictitious name.  However, he was later identified after his fingerprints were taken.  Once he was run through the system, police learned that he was to be held for deportation and that he had been in hiding since 1995.

Wednesday night, Vukicevic was held on an order issued by the U.S. Department of Justice Immigration and Naturalization Services.  On Thursday, he was given to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
