New York Jetts' Player Helps Friend Facing Deportation

In New York, Dwight Lowery of the New York Jetts had some rather complicated issues on his mind during last week's game.  According to head coach Rex Ryan, Lowery, "had some things on his plate, some issues that he was dealing with, and I think it took away from some of his focus."

Lowery's mind was supposedly fixated on his friend in San Francisco, who was facing deportation back to Mexico.  While leaving his hotel room to go play last weekend's game, Lowery learned that his friend had been arrested for trespassing at a Giants baseball game.  After the arrest, his friend learned that he would be deported to Mexico unless he was able to come up with bail money.

When asked what happened, Lowery said, "Right before I'm about to leave the team hotel, I wired money, and I get to the stadium and go out and warm up and I'm constantly checking my cell phone to see if it went though."

Lowery continued to play, but constantly wondered if the money he had wired made it through to San Francisco authorities in time for the 6 PM EDT deadine.  If authorities did not receive the funds, his friend would be deported without hesitation.

Finally, after the game had ended, Lowery learned that his wired money had been received and that his friend was not deported.

"I started crying, just broke down and cried because I thought I was going to lose one of my best friends," Lowery said. "The thought of that caused me to get emotional."
