Georgia Voters Are Now Required To Prove Citizenship

A bill that requires voters in Georgia to prove U.S. citizenship before registering to vote has been passed.

Senate Bill 86, sponsored by Sen. Cecil Staton (R-Macon), requires anyone registering to vote to show proof of citizenship, either by a birth certificate, driver's license, naturalization papers, or any other document that proves citizenship.

Opponents of the bill include Rep. Pedro Martin (D-Duluth), who say it jeopardizes the electoral process for immigrants.

"Why are the members of the House and the Senate so scared of people who look and sound different?" he asked.

Rep. Doug McKillip (D-Athens) believes the legislation will be shot down in federal court as unconstitutional.

Despite opposition, the House passed the bill by a vote of 104-67.
