U.S. AWOL Soldier Seeks Asylum in Germany

A soldier from Cleveland is seeking asylum in Germany after going AWOL over a year and a half ago.

Specialist Andre Shepherd worked as an Apache helicopter mechanic in Iraq, but was based in Germany at the time of his disappearance. Shepherd called the Iraq war, "illegal," "internationally condemned," and "shown to be founded on a series of lies."

According to Shepherd's German lawyer, Shepherd can seek asylum under the international Geneva Conventions, which supersedes any NATO treaties or agreements the United States may have with Germany.

In 2005, a German court found the Iraq war unlawful after it reversed the demotion of a German army officer who refused to work on a computer program because he thought it could be used in Iraq.
