Visas
Visas
Before a foreigner can legally enter a country, they must obtain a visa which outlines the length of time they will be staying in the country and the purpose of their entry into the country.
A foreigner who wishes to enter into the United States must obtain a visa if they are not a citizen of the 27 Visa Waiver Program countries. In the U.S., there are two basic types of visas, nonimmigrant and immigrant. Nonimmigrant Visas are for temporary stays within the country and Immigrant Visas are for permanent residence.
There are also Visitor Visas, which are temporary in nature. If a person wishes to obtain a Visitor Visa, they must fulfill certain government regulated requirements. A person wishing to obtain a Visitor Visa must prove that they are:
- Entering the U.S. for pleasure, business, or medical care.
- Entering the U.S. for a temporary amount of time.
- Entering the U.S., but have citizenship in another country which they have binding obligations to.
