Immigration DNA Testing

In recent years, the United States government has discovered that genetic testing is a valuable tool that can verify a stated biological relationship when no other credible evidence is available for an immigration visa (IV) application.

If it appears as if a genetic test is necessary, a Consular Office may suggest that visa applicants undergo genetic testing to prove that a stated biological relationship exists. The types of relationships tested for DNA, include:

  • Paternity (the father)
  • Maternity (the mother)
  • A full sibling
  • Half-sibling

As of today's technology, the notion of testing more distant relationships is impractical, and such DNA testing is not considered reliable.

The DNA testing of close biological relationships is considered to be 99.5 percent accurate; therefore, it is the only document-free method accepted for proof of a biological connection.

Due to the expense and delays inherent in DNA testing, it should only be used when there is no other credible evidence (documentation, photos, etc.) that a biological relationship exists.

Who pays for DNA tests?

Genetic testing is strictly voluntary; all costs and expenses associated with testing are paid for by the petitioner and/or the beneficiary. The costs must be paid to the laboratory in advance of the testing. Additionally, submitting to a genetic test does not offer any guarantees that a visa will be issued.

Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) testing is considered highly accurate and it is the most widely available technology for testing biological relationships. Laboratories prefer the buccal swab (cheek), which collects cells from the inside of the mouth or cheek using a long cotton swab, similar to a Q-tip.

Though there are different ways to collect human DNA, buccal swabs are the preferred method because they are easier to collect, painless, non-invasive, and easier to ship than blood samples.
