Midwest Leaders Claim Immigration is the Key to Their Future

According to recent news reports, leaders in the Midwest claim that a lot of their regions future depends on the immigration legislation that is passed. Nearly a quarter of high level professionals in the health and food field are immigrants, holding jobs with hill skill levels and ability required. The state of Michigan is known for having the largest Arab community in the nation, in the dairy business within Wisconsin half of the workers are from Mexico. Essentially, in the food processing plants throughout the Midwest are comprised of immigrant workers and if they are unable to work there the food and health business will be greatly affected.

The overall economy of the Midwest is centered on the usage of immigrants, and because of this immigration reform in America is absolutely essential; particularly in the way the Midwest is able to have a globally affective market of influence. Immigrant workers are an essential part of the work force in the Midwest as there are a number of baby boomer workers who are now retiring, and many of the young people are moving to the coastal states for different reasons. However, due to the heavy influx of immigrants in the area, they population has remained stable. According to speakers at a conference in Washington D.C. addressing this very issue, these immigrants were very beneficial during the recession period for employers who needed to keep their companies afloat.

The "Immigration and U.S. Economic Competitiveness: A View from the Midwest" conference was geared towards discussing these very issues and concerns, and many employers in the Midwest are claiming just how important immigrant workers are for their economy. This conference was not a onetime fix it meeting, it was a platform for further discussions on how the U.S. and immigration reform will affect this specific concern. According to a Chicago Councilman on Global Affairs, rethinking for the industrial issues and population declines demand immigration.

Leaders all throughout the Midwest plan on partnering up in order to address this very real issue until changes are made in Congress. They want to stress the fact that for their society and the growth of the economy, the use of immigrants is absolutely essential and beneficial specifically for the Midwest. One of the factors addressed by one of these leaders, Marshall Bouton is that if there are not enough workers or places to build plants and factories, companies are going to start looking elsewhere; ultimately moving their businesses to other countries rather than having immigrants come to our country to work instead.

A common concern for business leaders is that there are many immigrants who are in the United States for education, and because often various immigration laws and restrictions, they are unable to offer them employment within their companies. Undocumented student immigrants have little rights within the country, which is why legislation such as the DREAM Act are being fought for. This would specifically address the idea that as long as an undocumented student has a clear criminal record, they are eligible for employment during their time in America.

Doris Meissner, Former U.S. Immigration Commissioner, claims that after the topic of immigration was touched on during the 2012 presidential election campaign, a desire for reform and change has been triggered at full force. More and more people are now aware of the issues at hand and fighting for change to finally take place. She claims that there is now, more than ever, a larger urgency to address this very flawed system of immigration.
